Self-evaluation: How does your real CV look like?

An interesting discovery I made recently was to google the word CV or Curriculum Vitae. I’ve googled the word CV a few times to get its spelling right or to get samples of well-written CVs, but I have never once looked at what it actually meant.

A curriculum vitae (English: /kəˈrɪkjʊləm ˈviːtaɪ, -ˈwiːtaɪ, -ˈvaɪtiː/),[1][2] Latin for “course of life”, often shortened as CV or vita (plural vitae), is a written overview of someone’s life’s work.

Looking at the definition above and truly understanding what the words “overview of someone’s life work” means, I couldn’t help but look at my actual CV and compare it to what my real life’s work is.

After evaluating every single bullet point and job section on my CV, I realized my CV is all just a bunch of fluff. Its all exaggerated words put together to make myself appealing to any future employer or investor.

Talking about someone’s life work doesn’t just entail showing all the greatness that was produced in a lifetime. I believe what makes a person significant is not just the end result that he/she has accomplished, but all the failures, mishaps, broken relationships, & suffering that they have endured in reaching greatness.

Having this in mind, I took a very uncanny challenge for myself, I took a deep breath and added all my failures to every single achievement I indicated on my CV. It looked like this:

Overview Portion of my CV

Success Story: “Cybill is an inspirational and innovative leader with extensive experience in M&A for the Staffing and Recruiting Industry.”

Real Story:Cybill started all sorts of businesses and failed many many times before finally reaching a place of humility, accepting defeat and working her way back to the top. She was overly critical and stubborn about using technology her way and was too proud to ask the help of others. She began her career in M&A in the staffing industry by way of her ex who has already a prominent figure in it. She had zero knowledge in the field and lied to many clients when she started.

Success Story: She has a broad and successful career having been a manager, a realtor and an entrepreneur. She owned and operated a Healthcare Staffing RPO sourcing nurses and locum tenens physicians which has been acquired in 2017.

Real Story: She has been confused for most of her career and tried out everything to make both ends meet in her twenties. She worked as a manager, realtor, and entrepreneur because she didn’t really have much of a choice. It was either, sink or swim horribly and she swam-horribly. She founded a company that did well for a while and failed when it was acquired because she didn’t manage the expectations of her principals, clients and employees and didn’t have any processes in place in order to run a smooth business. She convinced her boyfriend at the time, to leave his job and to work with her out of desperation and made the worst mistake of her professional and personal life at the time. The business was acquired but it didn’t perform well. Although great lessons were learned, the downfall was catastrophic.

Success Story: Known as the backbone of the firm, she leads the operations having duties that encompass leadership of the back-office, marketing & business development. Her work is instrumental in the growth of the company having built intuitive workflows, automation and processes. She currently holds an International Mergers and Acquisitions Expert charter issued by the Institute of Mergers, Acquisitions & Alliances.

Real Story:Known as the go-to person for everything, she leads operations having an insane amount of workload trying to juggle too many things at one time. Her work is detrimental to the growth of the company because if she disappears, the Kraken would be awakened and all havoc would break loose. She currently holds a certification she is absolutely uncertain that she deserves, but its a certification she was lucky to obtain and has a really fancy ring to it.

I continued this exercise with every single job and business I had and realized how much I have failed to get to where I am in life today. I have failed over and over and over again. I sound masochistic by doing this, I know. But what came out of this, isn’t a sense of defeat, nor a sense of unworthiness. What came out of this, is pride and fulfillment. An utter and beautiful satisfaction that I stand today bringing true value to every person I engage in business and personal relationships with.

I come from nothing. I lived in a poor neighborhood. I am a Filipina who grew up from a small city of a province in a third world country. I dropped out of college. I delved into businesses I had no idea of. I built many companies, some succeeded, some crashed and burned but I came out alive and kicking ass.

Self-evaluation, they say, is one of the most crucial elements needed to build mental toughness. It is the one exercise I am relentless to practice daily. So today as I write this blog post, I practice self-evaluation. Seeing my successes and failures, I look at each experience as a catalyst for greatness. Inversely, I take this opportunity to ponder on my destructive decisions and my negative habits and make myself aware of these patterns.

As Carl Jung once said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”

So, my real CV looks pretty crappy. But, what can I say, those experiences, are my true life’s work, and I’m really proud to tell you my success and failure story.

Cheers!
